Stati del Tracking
Below are the main statuses you may encounter during the journey of a shipment, from the moment the order is received until final delivery.
Classification of states
The states are divided into 3 groups:
SUCCESS : In the context of tracking a shipment, the "Success" status group (or "Success Statuses" ) generally refers to all those steps that indicate a positive and regular progress of the shipment . In practice, they are the updates that signal that everything is proceeding according to plan.
WARNING ; the "Warning" status group in shipment tracking refers to all those messages that indicate an anomaly, a problem or a deviation from the normal logistics flow , but which do not yet equate to a definitive failure of delivery. These statuses serve as an alert signal and often require attention or intervention.
DANGER : The "Danger" status group in shipment tracking refers to critical or irreversible situations that indicate that the shipment has been compromised, canceled, or can no longer be completed successfully . These are the most serious statuses, often associated with a definitive closure of the logistics process. These statuses require significant corrective actions (such as reshipment, refund, or return management) and often involve timely communication to the customer to explain what happened.
"Success" Statuses
Booked
The "Booked" status indicates that the shipment has been registered in the courier's system, but the package has not yet been physically collected. In practice, the sender has booked the collection or shipment and generated the label, but the goods are still at the point of departure.
Retreat
The "Collected " status indicates that the package has been physically collected by the courier from the sender or a collection point. This is the first concrete step in the shipment's journey: from this moment, the package leaves the sender's hands to enter the transport service's logistics network. In other words, the courier has "taken charge" of the package and is preparing to sort it to the next logistics center. This status confirms that the shipment has actually left and that the next steps — such as transit or delivery — are imminent.
Arrived at the Hub
The status "Arrived at Hub " indicates that the package has reached an intermediate logistics center, called a "hub". This is a key hub in the transport network: here, shipments are sorted, organized by geographic area, and forwarded to the next destination. It's a bit like a central station for packages: from this point, the journey continues to the next hub or directly to the delivery area, depending on the distance to be covered.
In Transit
The "In Transit" status indicates that the package is currently en route between two points in the logistics network, such as from a central hub to a regional sortation center or the final destination. This is the actual leg of the journey, where the package can travel long distances by land, air, or sea. At this stage, it is not uncommon for a few hours (or days, in the case of international shipments) to pass without any visible updates, but this does not mean that there is a problem: the package is simply on its way.
In Delivery
The "In Delivery" status indicates that the package has been handed over to the courier for the final leg of the journey: it has boarded the van (or scooter, or even bike!) and is about to reach its destination. Generally, this update means that delivery will take place during the day, often within a few hours. At this point, it is good practice to make sure that someone is available to receive it or that the instructions for collection are clear (e.g. intercom, concierge, safe place).
Delivered
The "Delivered" status indicates that the package has been successfully delivered to the indicated address. This is the last stage of the journey: the shipment has reached its recipient and no further movements are planned. Depending on the carrier, this status may include additional information, such as the delivery time, the name of the person who signed for it, or a photo of the package left in a safe place (e.g. in front of the door or with the doorman).
At Customs
The status "In Customs" indicates that the shipment is currently under customs control, meaning it is at a customs office for inspection and approval before proceeding to its final destination.
During this phase, customs authorities can:
- Check shipping documents
- apply duties or taxes
- physically inspect the contents of the package
- request additional information from sender or recipient
This is a standard stage for international shipments, but the duration may vary depending on the type of goods, the country of entry and the completeness of the documentation provided.
"Warning" States
Pending
The "Pending" status indicates that the shipment is temporarily suspended, awaiting further action or clarification before it can continue. This can happen for various reasons: customs problems, missing documentation, difficulty in the delivery address, or even a request from the recipient to postpone delivery. It is a sort of "forced pause" in the package's journey, in which it waits for a knot to be resolved before starting again. Usually, the courier provides details or instructions on how to proceed to unblock the situation.
Address problems
The "Address Problems" status indicates that the courier was unable to continue the delivery due to incorrect, incomplete, or ambiguous information about the recipient's address. This could be a missing house number, an incorrect postcode, a name on the intercom that does not match, or an address that was not recognized by the system. This status requires rapid intervention: often the courier will try to contact the sender or recipient for clarification, or it will be necessary to update the data directly via the courier's website or customer service. In practice, the package is ready to leave again... but needs clearer directions to get to its destination.
Waiting for customer collection
The status "Waiting for Customer Collection" means that the package has arrived at the designated collection point and is waiting for the recipient to collect it in person. This collection point can be a participating store, a self-service locker, or a post office, depending on the service chosen during shipping. The package is safe and ready, but the journey isn't over until it's collected! Typically, a deadline is given for collection, after which the package may be returned to the sender.
Warning
The "Warning" status indicates that a potentially critical problem or anomaly has been detected during the shipping process, which could compromise its normal continuation. Unlike a purely informational status, a warning requires immediate attention, both from the carrier and the sender or recipient.
The causes can vary:
- missing or invalid documentation
- damaged or non-compliant package
- Repeated failed delivery attempts
- customs or security issues
This status is often accompanied by a specific explanation and a request for action (e.g. provide additional data, contact support, or confirm information).
Postpone Delivery
The "Postpone Delivery" status indicates that the delivery of the package has been temporarily postponed from the date initially scheduled. This change may have been requested directly by the recipient (for example, because they were not available on that day) or decided by the courier for operational reasons, such as unforeseen logistics, adverse weather conditions or high volume peaks. In practice, the package is on stand-by: it is not blocked, but its delivery has simply been postponed, while still keeping it within the logistics flow.
Contact the Depot
The "Contact Warehouse" status indicates that you need to contact the fulfillment center or warehouse that is handling the shipment. This can happen in several circumstances:
- non-delivery for unspecified reasons
- problems with the recipient's address or availability
- special needs related to the package (e.g. dimensions, conditions, documentation)
- scheduled but still avoidable return to sender
In practice, the package is in an “administrative hold” state, and contact with the depot is to provide instructions or resolve an obstacle before the shipment can continue or be returned.
Partial Delivery
The "Partial Delivery" status indicates that only part of the expected content has been delivered to the recipient, while one or more items are still in transit or subject to a separate delivery.
Causes may include:
- items shipped from different warehouses
- dimensions or weights that require separate transport
- unexpected delays on part of the shipment
- non-simultaneous sorting at logistics centers
The courier may make another delivery in the following days, and updated tracking is usually provided for each package.
Rejected
The "Refused" status indicates that the recipient has chosen not to accept delivery of the package when the courier attempted delivery. This decision can arise for various reasons, such as:
- package visibly damaged upon arrival
- incorrect or unrecognized order
- change of mind by the customer
- unauthorized delivery attempt
Typically, after a refusal, the package is temporarily held at the depot awaiting instructions (return to sender, re-delivery, or destruction in extreme cases). The carrier may also send a notification to the sender with the details of the refusal.
Contact the Sender
The "Contact Sender" status indicates that the carrier or tracking system has encountered a situation that requires direct intervention by the sender of the shipment. This can happen, for example, in the following cases:
- missing or incorrect documentation
- problems related to the contents of the package (restrictions, customs, dimensions)
- request for authorization or confirmation to proceed with delivery
- package damaged or lost during transport
In essence, the recipient cannot unblock the situation: it is the sender who must contact the courier to provide information or make operational decisions.
"Danger" States
Delivery Attempt Failed
The "Delivery Attempt Failed" status indicates that the courier attempted to deliver the package, but failed for some reason. The reasons can vary, including:
- recipient absent at the time of passage
- address not accessible or incorrect
- refusal of delivery without a specific reason
- lack of documentation or payment required upon delivery (e.g. cash on delivery)
Usually, after a failed attempt the courier leaves a note with instructions on how to retry or how to collect the package at a designated point. Sometimes, a second delivery is automatically scheduled.
Returned to Sender
The "Returned to Sender" status indicates that the shipment was redirected to the original sender, instead of reaching the intended recipient. This can happen for a variety of reasons, such as:
- incorrect or incomplete address
- recipient absent after several delivery attempts
- explicit refusal by the recipient
- maximum storage times exceeded at a collection point
- unresolved customs issues
In essence, the package's journey ends by returning to the point of departure, and the courier usually updates the tracking with this information, also indicating the date and reason for the return.
Tracking Expired
The "Tracking Expired" status means that the shipment tracking code has not been active or updated for a long period of time, so much so that it is considered inactive by the courier's system.
This can happen in several cases:
- The shipment was completed long ago, but the tracking has not been updated with the final status
- the package was lost or had no recorded movements for many days
- the code provided was incorrect or was never activated correctly
Typically, this status is a warning bell: it is advisable to contact the customer service of the courier or the seller for clarification and, if necessary, request a reshipment or a refund.
Canceled
The "Cancelled" status indicates that the shipment was canceled before delivery, interrupting the logistics process. This can happen for several reasons:
- the sender decided to cancel the shipment before collection
- Payment was not completed successfully
- the package was refused or blocked at an early stage in transit
- technical or administrative problems have arisen which have prevented the departure
When a shipment is canceled, it will not be delivered to the recipient or continue on its journey. Usually, a notification is sent and, if applicable, a refund or return of the goods is initiated.
Not Withdrawn
The "Not Collected" status indicates that the recipient has not collected the package within the time limit set by the collection point (such as a locker, a partner store or a post office). After a certain number of days — which varies depending on the courier — the shipment is considered abandoned by the recipient.
In this situation, the package usually comes:
- returned to sender
- temporarily held at the warehouse
- or, in extreme cases, disposed of (if conditions permit)
This is an important condition to communicate promptly, especially if you want to avoid extra costs or the loss of the goods.
Reserved
The status "Reserved" (sometimes also translated as "Reserve in progress" ) can indicate that a shipment has been set aside or temporarily held for a specific purpose, before continuing with the normal delivery cycle. It is a less common status, but used in some specific contexts such as:
- shipments reserved for collection at a future date
- block pending specific instructions from the sender or recipient
- items that must meet a pre-established delivery time window
In essence, the package is already within the logistics circuit, but "on hold" for management or customization reasons.
Restore
The "Restoring" status indicates that the previously canceled, suspended or returned shipment has been reactivated in the logistics circuit, with the intent of completing the delivery process. This status may appear in situations such as:
- a “returned to sender” package that is put back into circulation
- a cancelled or blocked shipment that is manually reactivated
- a failed delivery that is rescheduled upon request
In practice, it is as if the package's journey had been paused or interrupted, and now it resumed from where it had stopped. This is a positive sign, because it means that the shipment is getting back "on track" to reach the recipient.
